Echo Deep - Spirits and Grooves
Q1. You’ve built a global footprint from Soweto to international stages. Which single moment or release most shaped your trajectory, and how does Spirits and Grooves carry that momentum forward?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one moment, but I’d say the turning point came when my sound first connected beyond Soweto when a track that was rooted in local rhythms found a home on international stages. That moment showed me the power of authenticity; that you don’t need to dilute your roots to reach the world. With Spirits and Grooves, I wanted to build on that energy. The album carries the same heartbeat of Soweto the township soul, the spiritual depth, the groove that raised me but it’s also a reflection of growth. It’s about blending homegrown sounds with global textures, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity. So in a way, it’s both a continuation and an evolution the sound of where I come from meeting where I’m going.
Q2. The album title suggests a dual focus on mood and rhythm. Can you describe the core concept behind Spirits and Grooves and how you balanced atmosphere with groove across the tracks?
“Spirits and Grooves” blends emotion and rhythm it’s about connecting soul and movement. I wanted each track to carry deep atmosphere while still keeping the groove alive, balancing spiritual melodies with driving beats that move both the heart and the body.
Q3. Walk us through your typical production chain for this project. How do you approach sound design, arrangement, and mixing to maintain consistency while exploring variety?
I start with the mood usually chords or a vocal sample that sets the tone. From there, I build the groove using layered percussion and basslines to create depth. For sound design, I blend organic textures with synths to keep it warm and alive. During arrangement, I focus on flow and emotion, making sure each track tells its own story but still fits the overall vibe. Mixing ties it all together I use space, balance, and tone to keep that “Spirits and Groove” energy consistent across the album.
Q4. You’ve collaborated with a range of artists and worked with labels like House Afrika. Which collaborations had the biggest impact on Spirits and Grooves, and in what ways did they push your sound outside your comfort zone?
House Afrika has always encouraged me to dig deeper and evolve my sound. Working with them pushed me to step outside my comfort zone to experiment with new rhythms, textures, and moods while still staying true to my deep, soulful roots. They challenged me to think beyond the club to create music that connects emotionally and spiritually, not just rhythmically. That freedom and trust helped me refine my sound into something more mature and expressive.
Collaborations with artists like InQfive, Scrooge KmoA & Lethiwe has the biggest impact on Spirits and Grooves. Each brought a unique energy - Working with them helped shape the album’s balance between deep emotion and rhythmic drive, pushing me to explore new sonic spaces while keeping that Echo Deep signature sound.
Q5. Which artist can we expect to hear from the Album feel free to list them all?
Unfortunately 80% of the album is ME but I have the talented, InQfive, Scrooge KmoA, Lethiwe, and vocals from Maline Aura
Q6. You’ve earned recognition such as The Akademia Music Award of Excellence (Dance/Electronica) and a Metro Awards nomination. How have these accolades shaped your approach to making Spirits and Grooves, and what doors did they open for you?
Those recognitions reminded me that authenticity pays off. Winning the Akademia Award and being nominated at the Metros gave me confidence to trust my sound and vision even more. They opened doors to collaborate with bigger names, reach new audiences globally, and build stronger industry connections. For Spirits and Grooves, that recognition inspired me to go deeper to make music that’s both soulful and world-class, something that represents growth and purpose beyond just the dancefloor.
Q7. Beyond the groove, are there themes or conversations you hope listeners engage with (e.g., community, identity, resilience)? How do these ideas weave into the album’s tracklist?
Absolutely Spirits and Grooves is more than just rhythm. It’s about connection, identity, and resilience. Each track carries a message of unity and healing from spiritual introspection to the celebration of African roots and community energy. The “Spirits” side reflects emotion, culture, and inner strength, while the “Grooves” side represents movement, joy, and togetherness. Together, they tell a story of finding balance between struggle and freedom, soul and rhythm.
08. With Spirits and Grooves as a milestone, what directions do you see for your next project new collaborations, formats (remixes, live sets, audiovisual), or expanding your footprint on radio and international stages?
With Spirits and Grooves setting the tone, I’m looking to expand both musically and visually. The next phase will explore more global collaborations, live instrumental sets, and audiovisual experiences that bring the music to life on stage. I also plan to push deeper into radio and festivals, connecting African house with the wider world. It’s all about growth blending deep roots with fresh sounds and reaching new audiences without losing the spirit that started it all.
