AfroNerd To The World (Album Interview)

1) What artists or genres have shaped your sound, and how do they reflect South Africa's diverse musical landscape?

AfroNerd draws inspiration from classic South African Kwaito and the raw Gqom sounds from Durban, blending them with Afro-Tech, Progressive House, and Melodic Afro-House alongside global influences. Our sound sits rooted in South Africa’s Afro-House tradition, marrying melodic electronic production with traditional rhythms. This fusion mirrors the country’s musical diversity and captures the vibrant, dance-driven energy that defines our sonic identity.

2) How do you balance personal storytelling with broader social commentary in your music?

I lead with honesty about my own experiences and emotions—that authenticity is what makes the music relatable. From a personal place, I weave in themes that reflect the collective experience within my community and culture. So, while the perspective is intimate, the messages speak to shared realities, struggles, and celebrations that many people recognize.

3) In your view, what role does music play in fostering community and dialogue within South African society?

Music in South Africa is more than entertainment it’s storytelling, resistance, and connection. It carries our history, culture, and shared experiences in a way words alone can’t. For me, music acts as a bridge, creating spaces where we can see ourselves in each other’s stories, even across different backgrounds. It also sparks dialogue by bringing important social issues into the open in a human, relatable way. In a country as diverse as ours, music becomes a common language that fosters unity, understanding, and belonging.

4) What’s the most challenging part of creating “To the World”?

When producing a full album like To the World Vol. 2, the biggest challenge was finding vocalists who truly fit my sound and vision. Talent isn’t enough the right energy and tone that complement the music matter just as much. The financial aspect is also tough: fairly compensating vocalists while managing the project budget. Working with collaborative producers adds another layer, as I strive to fuse our sounds authentically and cohesively. Limited equipment presented additional hurdles, prompting me to be creative and resourceful to achieve the quality I envisioned. All of these factors were demanding, but they pushed me to grow as a producer and artist.

5) Share some of the artists featured on this album.

I collaborated with artists who share my work ethic and bring distinctive sounds and talents. Featured names include Zulu Mageba, Thab De Soul, Msiz’kay, King Exodus, P Elle, Liya Saki, Theola, Budda Stanza, IC DJ, J Trendz, and Mtee-Mbanaire.

6) Why did you choose to release To the World with All Shades of the Drums Recordings?

I released To the World Vol. 1 with All Shades of the Drum because I wanted a label that truly resonates with the album’s essence. They’re passionate about authentic African sounds, which aligns with my Afrohouse and Afrotech vision. The label’s name reflects the diversity, rhythm, and cultural depth I’m after. I also respect their work ethic and the focused attention they give to each project. Additionally, being UK-based helps me connect with regions where my music is heavily streamed, opening opportunities to reach that audience and potentially tour there in the near future.
